So you’ve seen the jaw-dropping photos of Mount Bromo’s smoky sunrise, the turquoise lake inside Ijen crater, and the epic curtain of Tumpak Sewu waterfall on Instagram…
And now you're thinking: “I want to do all of that — but how the heck do I plan it without going crazy?”
You’re not alone.
Most travelers don’t realize how tricky it can be to fit three different destinations, far apart, into one smooth itinerary — especially if you’re new to East Java.
But don’t worry. We’ve crafted a 5 days 4 nights (5D4N) itinerary that balances adventure, rest, and good vibes, so you don’t burn out trying to see it all.
Let’s break it down day by day — all killer, no filler. ✌️
Day 1 – Arrival in Surabaya / Malang → Head to Bromo
- Arrive early in Surabaya or Malang (morning flight recommended).
- Private transfer or shared ride to Cemoro Lawang — the gateway village to Mount Bromo.
- Easy afternoon: chill, enjoy mountain views, grab dinner, sleep early.
- Stay overnight at a local guesthouse near Bromo.
🛏 Tip: Staying close to the crater means you can catch the sunrise without crazy travel time at 3 AM.
Day 2 – Mount Bromo Sunrise Tour → Transfer to Lumajang
- Wake up around 2:30–3:00 AM to start your Bromo sunrise adventure.
- Visit these top spots:
- Viewpoint at Penanjakan Hill
- Sea of Sand
- Mount Bromo crater
- Teletubbies Hill (Savanna)
- Tour ends around 9–10 AM.
- Have breakfast, shower, then drive to Lumajang (around 5 hours).
- Check in and rest at your accommodation near Tumpak Sewu.
🎒 Pro Tip: Bring a scarf or buff — the volcanic sand can get intense!
Day 3 – Explore Tumpak Sewu Waterfall & Goa Tetes
- Start early for the Tumpak Sewu hike. The earlier, the better (cooler weather & better lighting).
- Highlights:
- Top viewpoint: The famous panoramic shot of the falls.
- Trek down to the bottom of the waterfall — prepare to get wet!
- Optional: Explore Goa Tetes (drippy cave and mini waterfalls).
- Finish by noon or early afternoon, then chill, have lunch, and head to Banyuwangi (or stay another night in Lumajang).
📷 Bring a dry bag if you plan to take your phone or camera!
Day 4 – Midnight Trekking to Ijen Crater & Blue Fire
- If you haven’t traveled to Banyuwangi yet, use the afternoon to do so.
- Rest in the evening — you’ll need the energy.
- Start around midnight with a drive to Paltuding Basecamp.
- Hike ~3 km uphill (takes about 1.5 to 2 hours).
- Witness the surreal blue fire and watch the sunrise over the stunning acidic crater lake.
- Descend after sunrise and return to your hotel for breakfast and a nap.
😷 Gas masks are usually included in guided tours — you’ll need one for safety near the sulfur vents.
Day 5 – Chill & Travel Back (or Continue Your Journey)
- Enjoy a relaxed morning.
- Depending on your plan, you can:
- Catch a train or flight from Banyuwangi.
- Take a ferry to Bali (only 1 hour across).
- Or travel back to Surabaya if you need to fly from there.
🧳 That’s it — three of Java’s most iconic natural wonders, done right in 5 days!
Trying to squeeze Bromo, Ijen, and Tumpak Sewu into a short trip can be stressful if you’re not familiar with Java’s geography and logistics.
